Last night I was snail hunting yet again. I don’t know why I enjoy it so much. It’s sort of therapeutic I guess. Everyone’s in bed, it’s quiet, there I am all alone with my flashlight and my boots. I can sort things out in my mind. I figure out the day’s problems in between flattening the slimy little beasts.
I was in my shade garden. I looked down and saw what I thought was a lizard but it’s body keep going and going. I realized it was a snake. I finally found the head. The head was quite slender and I knew it would have a hard time biting me so I picked it up and brought it into my son’s room—he, of course, was still awake.
I let it go on his bed. My husband and my other son soon joined us. We all held the snake and played with it. It was very beautiful, and docile. It was a light coppery pink color. I let it go where I’d found it a few minutes later, and went back in the house to look it up on the Internet.
Of course I didn’t think to take a picture of it. Oh well, I was enjoying the moment.
It turns out that my little snake was a sharp-tail snake and it was doing the same thing I was doing—hunting.
The only difference is the snake was hunting for slugs.
I love this snake.
Chigiy, how cool! I would have probably watched the snake and not actually picked it up, but it sounds like a fun way for you and your family to interact with nature. Also, great pest control! Go snake!

Genie,
I should have probably put in a "don't try this at home" disclaimer.
Since I was a little girl my brothers and I have always been around snakes. We always had them as pets and we always caught our own because we couldn't afford to buy them.
There are only a couple poisonous types aroound here and they are really easy to identfy.
That is why I felt comfortable picking the snake up.
Just remember all snakes bite. Some will and some wont, but they all can.

Now that's the way to go in terms of getting rid of slugs.
Snakes are such beautiful creatures ... I think they get a bad rap.

I think I would have freaked out. No. I KNOW I would have freaked out. I would have let the snake stay, but gone in the opposite direction. I'm glad you didn't run...it made for a much better post. :)

Hi Chigiy,
You have a subtle sense of humor that comes out in your posts. It makes them fun for me to read.
Thanks for the nice comments you left on my blog. I'm glad you find the thing interesting. My son says I'm quite pedantic--and sometimes I think he's right!
